Primary Treatment of Municipal Wastewater in High- Rate Anaerobic Filter at Low Temperatures

چکیده
The primary treatment of municipal wastewater was investigated in three high-rate anaerobic filter (AF) reactors operated in parallel at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.5, 1 and 1.5 h at low ambient temperature (average = 13°C). The media in each reactor consisted of vertical sheets of reticulated-polyurethane foam (RPF) with knobs. The results demonstrated that the AF reactor was an effective system for suspended solids (SS) removal. Total chemical oxygen demand (CODt) and suspended COD (CODss) removal efficiencies were 31 and 58%, respectively, at HRT of 1.0 h and were 40 and 67 %, respectively, at HRT of 1.5 h. The vertical orientation of RPF sheets with knobs and the presence of all biomass, only, in attached form in the AF reactors prevented reactors clogging. Therefore, the head losses were limited in the reactors (0.05 to 0.07 m). In addition to SS removal in the AF reactor, 8-15 % removal efficiency of dissolved COD (CODdis) was obtained and a partial anaerobic-digestion was achieved for the removed SS in the reactors. Moreover, the excess sludge from the AF reactor had a good settlability and filterability, as the sludge volume index (SVI) and filterability constant were 44 – 45 ml/g TS and 21x10 24x10 kg.m/s, respectively.

Background: Although anaerobic system has been successfully used for treating the strong industrial wastewater, its efficiency for low-strength wastewater as municipal wastewater is not satisfying. This study aimed to enhance the capability of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) for treating municipal wastewater. Methods: A 7-L ABR with 5 compartments was operated for a 287-day period fed with ...

Background & objectives: Anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) is one of the low cost wastewater treatment systems compared to the aerobic method. Hoverer it should be studied and developed to overcome its limitations such as insufficient nutrient removal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the 5 sectional ABR pilot and improve it with integrated electric coagulation process for ...
متن کاملSlaughterhouse wastewater treatment by combined anaerobic baffled reactor and anaerobic filter: study of OLR and HRT optimization in ABR/AF reactors
Background: Slaughterhouse wastewater (SWW) is hardly treated due to the large amount of organic matter, nutrients and suspended solids. These materials are naturally decomposed through biological processes, and then environmental pollution, transmission of pathogens and problems become smelled. Conventional purification methods require high investment costs, high energy consumption and expert ...
متن کاملNitrogen removal by a nitritation-anammox bioreactor at low temperature.
Currently, nitritation-anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) bioreactors are designed to treat wastewaters with high ammonium concentrations at mesophilic temperatures (25 to 40°C). The implementation of this technology at ambient temperatures for nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater following carbon removal may lead to more-sustainable technology with energy and cost savings. However, t...
